Prague Ratter vs Manchester Terrier – Which is the Better Breed?

Prague Ratter vs Manchester Terrier

We are looking to purchase perhaps a Prague Ratter or a Manchester Terrier a dog as our good friend and family member Max ( Border Collie) of 14 years passed on. I’ve been researching info on many breeds and finally I’ve narrowed it down to 2, Prague Ratter and Toy Manchester Terrier. I’m looking for some input from a professional as to which of the 2 has a better disposition. I know that the Prague Ratter is a rare breed and quite difficult to obtain. I’ve also been told by a Toy Manchester Terrier breeder that the Prague Ratter is quite an agressive breed and the Toy Manchester is a better choice. Please help? Thank you.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Hi P.J.

I don’t have any experience with the Prague Ratter as a breed. However, I will say that it is more likely that if it is common that the characteristic of aggression comes up as a breed trait it is more likely a byproduct of a limited gene pool, which isn’t a good sign. Limited gene pools often result in behavioural and physical characteristics for which there may be limited or no treatment options. I would investigate further to see if this breed’s gene pool is indeed shallow and if so I would give some serious thought as to whether the risks outweigh the benefits regarding considering it as a companion animal.

One of many of the more important aspects of the proper breeding of dogs for human companionship is the absence of aggression towards humans. Even in guarding breeds, aggression is unnatural when directed at handlers treating the dogs respectfully.

Aggression obviously exists in a widespread manner in many dogs, regardless of breed. This is in part due to poor breeding but it is also often a byproduct of poor socialization and/or using training methods such as ”All Positive/Force-Free’’ training. I recommend investing in two of my e-books Socialize Your Puppy for Everything and The Beautiful Balance – Dog Training with Nature’s Template and reading the following article I recently wrote – https://www.askthedogguy.com/getting-a-dog/

  1. I have 2 male and female 7 and 8 years old, from D.Ruffer in S. Dakota. Just wanted to say there is absolutely no aggression and they are wonderful w/ children. Love them much.

  2. I have a one year old Prague Ratter, a male–and he is completely unaggressive and pretty close to the ideal dog: low-shedding, cuddly, playful, easily trained, quiet (non-yappy,) healthy, and gentle. This is the quintessential BEST tiny dog one could hope for!
