Rabies Vaccine Miasm - A Cause Of Sudden Onset Aggression?

Someone commented on the article When Should You Put An Aggressive Dog Down (Euthanize/Euthanasia) with this comment:

Please don’t feel guilty…there could have been an internal change in your dog’s wiring due to some health issue that your vet missed. There is controversy regarding the rabies vaccine, which is mandatory to give our dogs regarding severe behavioral issues such as aggression. There is a myriad of factors that may have caused your dog to act like this. So sorry that it came to this, but you did the right thing to protect your family.” – Jacqueline

I thought I should respond. It likely wasn’t the intent, but I felt there was a slight scare-mongering tone with regard to giving a dog a rabies vaccine. So I replied:

Dear Jacqueline,

“Worth remembering that the controversy regarding rabies vaccine reference is based on anecdotal evidence only. That doesn’t mean it should be dismissed, but in the grand scheme of things, what you do have scientific evidence for is that a rabies vaccination does protect against rabies and the spread of rabies. Also worthy of consideration is that the “controversy” regarding the rabies vaccine is currently controversial amongst very few. You will be hard-pressed to find a practicing veterinarian that can corroborate through personal experience any of the alleged extreme reactions claimed by those in the anti-vaccine world. That is not to say that there aren’t reactions, just not the extreme ones often alleged and grouped inside the category of Rabies Miasm. That is not to say that there can’t be less serious, and even upon occasion, serious reactions. I don’t want a new dog owner to read the above comment and dismiss the value of vaccinating their dog. It can be far more easily argued that the good, by far, outweighs the bad. Vaccines protect the dog, other people’s dogs, and people themselves. Ask any veterinarian that wrote their boards before vaccines for pups existed concerning the survival rate. Ask communities in India about rabies.” – John Wade (www.askthedogguy.com)

Addendum – It does bug me that many veterinarians insist on giving a rabies vaccine annually when a three-year vaccine is available. They often claim that they are at the mercy of government laws that insist it is given annually. I suspect they could influence that law if they wished.

The Beautiful Balance – Companion Dog Training With Nature’s Template (downloadable eBook

Dog Training Without Food Or Fear

Quite possibly the shortest book on companion dog training ever written. In fact, more of an essay. Nevertheless, if you can ignore the fact that I seemingly ignored every grammar and editing rule in existence (I did), you’ll likely learn more about companion dog training from the perspective of what not to do and why, and what to do and why than anywhere else. Only $4.99 CND which is about $4.40 US. Click Here

Help Others Discover Science & Common Sense In Companion Dog Training

My goal in 2022 (and onward) is to provide larger numbers of companion puppy and dog owners with access to science and common sense to counter the tsunami of ‘treat, treat, treat’ or ‘might is right’ misinformation that the amateur dog training world disseminates. I will be doing so via my YouTube Channel, Ask The Dog Guy ‘Pawdcast’, and an increased presence on things like Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, etc. (and this newsletter).

You can help me (ATDG) spread the word by:

  1. Buying Me A Few Coffees From Time To Time. You can Click Here To Make A One-Time Donation.
  2. You can also become a Patron of Ask The Dog Guy and support spreading the word about science and common sense by helping underwrite ATDG articles, ATDG YouTube Channel, and ATDG Pawdcast by Clicking on the membership link on my Buy Me A Coffee Page instead. There are various levels of patronage available. Some with pretty good benefits.
  3. Sharing/forwarding your favorite ATDG articles, ATDG YouTube Videos, and ATDG Pawdcast episodes with friends.

Any support no matter how small helps.

Many thanks,

Pawdcast content ranges from responses to companion dog behavior questions, to tips about training, breeds, breeding, rescues, etc. You’ll find the content is very different from most of the guidance you’ll find on the Internet and from people whose training experience seems to be based on watching the movie The Lady and The Tramp and confusing it with a documentary about dog behavior. (Treat, treat, treat or might is right.) Instead, you’ll find guidance based on both science and common sense along with the perspective of a 30+ year career working full-time with companion puppy and dog owners and their dogs.
